Former Miss Turkey sentenced to 14-months in jail for insulting the country's President on Instagram

A court in Istabul today, Tuesday 31, convicted a former Miss Turkey of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan through social media postings and gave her a 14-month suspended sentence.
27-year-old Merve Buyuksarac was found guilty of insulting a public official but immediately suspended the sentence on condition that she does not reoffend within the next five years.

Army Justifies The Killings Of Pro-Biafrans, gives reasons for such

The Nigerian army has explained why the soldiers were forced to kill pro-Biafran activists on May 30, Monday, The Cable reports. Sani Usman, army’s spokesman, said in statement that the military shot protesters over “unwarranted attack, breach of peace and creation of wide spread panic, tension and apprehension”. 

The Biafra group said that at least 30 protesters commemorating the 49th anniversary of the declaration of the defunct Biafra Republic by Odumegwu Ojukwu, were killed.

BIAFRA: We’re in democracy, people should be entitled to speak their minds- Ekweremadu

Deputy President of the Senate, Mr Ike Ekweremadu, has advised security agencies to always be cautious when quelling disturbances and protests to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

Ekerenmadu made the call at the Senate on Tuesday while speaking on Monday’s clashes between Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and security operatives some states in South-East and Delta.

He said that the country had witnessed a lot of unnecessary killings arising from clashes by members of the public and security agencies. According to Ekweremadu, the protest by IPOB, which led to bloody clashes in Delta and Anambra could have been handled differently.

Sara Di Pietrantonio, 22, was attacked on Sunday by 27-year-old ex boyfriend Vincenzo Paduano, local reporters were told.

Her alleged attacker reportedly first set fire to her vehicle, before she managed to escape and started to run for her life.

The Borno State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) on Sunday, May 29, discovered two bomb-making factories in Dikwa.

The NSCDC Commandant in the state, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, made the disclosure in an interview with the News men in Maiduguri. Abdullahi said that the factories were discovered during a patrol by men of the command in collaboration with the troops of the 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army.

How police, army others disrupted our prayers – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have accused the Nigerian police and other security agencies of disrupting their prayer and killing some of their members. Speaking exclusively to NAIJ.com, the spokesperson of the IPOB, Powerful Emma said security operatives attacked some IPOB members at Nkpor in Onitsha, Anambra state.

Emma said the people attacked were most of IPOB members who came into Onitsha town for the planned remembrance of the people who died between 1967 and 1970. The Republic of Biafra was first declared on May 30, 1967 by late Odumegwu Ojukwu. The declaration of Biafra further led to the civil war that started in 1967 and ended in 1970.

Fantastically Corrupt: N1.732 trillion lost under Buhari in one year

 
In just one year of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, the Nigerian stock market crashed by N1.732 trillion as against the N11.658 trillion market capitalization was as at May 28, 2015.

According to a report by Punch newspaper, in the first quarter of 2016, the All-Share Index also crashed to 28,902.25 basis points from 34,310.37 basis points as the equity category lost over N1.053tn in the first quarter of 2016. Saudi Arabia executes Nigerian man after he was convicted of killing a police officer

Saudi authorities have executed a Nigerian man after convicting him of murdering a police officer, AFP reports. It was the 95th execution of the year in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom, which imposes the death penalty for offences including murder, drug trafficking, armed robbery, rape and apostasy. The surge in executions has drawn concern from human rights groups.
 
Fahd Houssawi was executed on Sunday, May 29 in the western city of Taif, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency. He had been found guilty of strangling a policeman and beating him to death, the ministry said.

Obama pays tribute to fallen soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery

President Obama presided over his final Memorial Day as commander-in-chief on Monday at Arlington National Cemetery, paying tribute to soldiers who were often cut down in their youth.

The president said he’s emotionally moved by the all-too-close dates listed on Arlington grave markers.

“One thing you’ll notice is that so many of the years, dates of birth and dates of death, are so close together,” Obama said. “They belong to young Americans, those who never lived to be honored as veterans for their service.”

Biafra supporters allegedly stabbed one police officer and dumped two others inside River Niger after a clash today May 30th.  The police in Owerri made the disclosure of the arrest on Monday, May 30, claiming that the members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) were disturbing the peace.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the arrests, said those arrested would be prosecuted. The MASSOB members began the march at Waterside Primary School, Owerri, from where they moved to Rotibi Street to Oguamana Street before linking Douglas Road. At Douglas Road the marchers met heavily armed security men, who threw teargas at them at Ama JK end of the street and arrested some.

A woman has been declared missing after being taken by a crocodile during a late-night swim on Sunday night in far north Queensland,Australia.

Cindy Waldron, 46, from Lithgow in New South Wales, was swimming with her friend, Leeann Mitchell, 47, from Cairns, at Thornton Beach at Daintree, north of Cairns around 10pm.

The attack which took place over the weekend at Ozochi community in Ahoada-east local government area of the state, stirred lots of panic within the area.

Leadership reports that the suspected cult members invaded the community on the night of Saturday, May 28,, shooting sporadically, but could not confirm the group that carried out the heinous act, or what led to the attack. 145-Year-Old Coffin Discovered In A Home With Corpse Of Girl Still Holding Red Rose

A coffin has been discovered with the corpse of a young girl, buried 145 years ago still gripping a red rose underneath a San Francisco home. Construction workers were remodeling Ericka Karner's childhood home in the Richmond District when they hit the lead-and-bronze coffin buried underneath the concrete garage. 
The 3-foot casket's two windows revealed the perfectly preserved skin and long blonde hair of the girl, who is believed to have died when she was three-years-old.  


It is believed the girl was one of the 30,000 people who were buried in the city's Odd Fellows Cemetery, which was active for 30 years before it was forced to shut in 1890. The bodies were moved to a Colma burial plot in the 1920s to allow for redevelopment - but the little girl in the long white dress and lavender flowers in her hair was left behind.
